Cycling has become hugely popular in Thailand in recent years, and in the rugged hills of the north, an annual race challenges cyclists to reach the peak of Thailand's highest mountain, Doi Inthanon. Just outside of Chiang Mai, the Doi Inthanon Challenge Bicycle Race, held this year on 10 March, draws thousands each year to participate in and observe the "hardest climb in Thailand." The 47-kilometre race is almost entirely uphill and cyclists must climb the gruelling inclines to reach 2,595 metres above sea level. Both professional cyclists and ambitious amateurs participate in this annual challenge, but only the best will make it to the top.
