It will all be sweetness and light down south in Songkhla on 17 September, when the annual ceremony of making Khanom Krok and sugar offerings to local monks ending their Buddhist Lent is held. For the monks, there must be no better way to end a period of dietary restriction by indulging in the yummy delights of Khanom Krok – the popular Thai treat of sweet-savoury cups of rice flour filled with custardy coconut cream, often topped with scallions, corn, taro, or pumpkin. The Songhkla ceremony is a celebratory affair, with coconut grating and milling competitions, a Khanom Krok contest, and students' cultural performances
