The sleepy farming village of Dan Sai in the mountains of Loei Province in the North-east, jolts awake just once a year – on the first weekend after the sixth full moon - with the colourful frenzy of its Phi Ta Khon Festival. This year’s Festival is expected on the weekend of 15 June. It’s a unique event, but contains elements of other regional festivals encouraging rain and good luck for planting seasons. The procession of masked men and boys - some wielding phallic charms known as Bhalad Kihik - is the most impressive part of this hive of community activity.
