One of the most important days of the Buddhist calendar, Khao Phansa, the first day of Buddhist Lent (Vassavasa), takes place this year on Saturday 28 July, marking the start of the rainy season when monks retreat to their temples to spend three months in study and meditation. Traditionally, candles were donated to monasteries enabling monks to continue their studies into the evenings. Nowadays, these offerings take the form of huge wax effigies shown off in local parades across the nation blending artistry, fun and festival.
