In Chiang Mai, the annual Loy Krathong festival – scheduled from 2-4 November - takes on an added dimension of enchantment thanks to Yi Ping, the northern Thai festival of sky lanterns held at the same time.
Not only are glowing lanterns released into the river, but also into the sky. The result is hundreds of twinkling lights illuminating the heavens and earth. For three days, the city comes alive with traditional lanterns, sound and light shows, boat races, beauty contests and traditional games.
The Krathong Parade is a highlight, with elaborate floats and costumed participants offering glimpses into Thailand’s fascinating legends and present-day pop culture.
