One of Thailand's most widely celebrated Buddhist holidays, Makha Bucha Day falls on the third full moon of the year by Thai lunar reckoning. On 19 February this year, the public holiday is a time for going to the temple, making merit and observing the moral precepts set out by Buddha. One of those includes abstaining from alcohol, so keep in mind that many bars will be closed on this auspicious day, though hotel bars may still be serving. Visitors who wish to participate in this holy day can observe almsgiving in the early hours as saffron-robed monks walk the streets and candle-lit devotions at temples from dawn till dusk.
