Artist Wattanapon Kitburin immortalises the faces of people he encounters by chance on his travels, in dreamy interpretations of their characters painted on walls around Bangkok.
They’re ordinary people, whose faces and environs are merged to create extraordinary artistic expressions of individual personality.
Wattanapon’s series of portraits – of a Nepali porter, a taxi driver, an old ceremonial man at a wedding or a fisherman – are skilled, surreal depictions that tell insightful stories of their lives and circumstances.
On vivid candy-coloured backgrounds, he juxtaposes their faces with the landscapes, architecture or objects of the surroundings where he met them.
This detailed work creates rounded and perceptive portrayals of simple lives, translated into deep, intriguing understandings.
Wattanapon, who studied at Bangkok’s College of Fine Arts and Sounsunandha University,
lives and works in the city. His portraits appear on exterior and interior walls of major corporations, hospitality businesses and schools all across Bangkok.
