Six Senses Samui has added a Down-to-Earth dimension to the luxury leisure and relaxation choices for guests at its picturesque headland setting.
Instead of lazing around the pool or indulging in spa treatments, they can roll up their sleeves to join staff and locals at The Farm on the Hill - feeding the goats, collecting newly-laid eggs and picking organic produce for their next meal, all in an authentic Thai farm experience.
It’s a fascinating sustainability initiative, that grew from a landscaping necessity on an empty hill plot adjacent to the resort.
Stumped about what to do with organic waste such as branch trimmings, unutilised grey water, and with a lack of nutrient-rich soil on the land, the resort came up with a solution to generate all-round benefits.
All it needed was 15-20 goats, more than 50 ducks and 50 chickens, a bio-char area, plus a simple greywater catchment system - and the problem was solved.
Now The Farm on the Hill is replete with lush, nutrient-rich soil, and able to produce organic eggs, goats’ milk, and abundant crops of fresh vegetables and herbs.
Other valuable features include a natural reed bed system that filters and re-mineralises the grey water, which can then be used for irrigation; a creative Waste-to-Wealth garden; and a module aquaponic system constructed from reclaimed waste materials.
Farm on the Hill is not only a sensible step in the right direction, it’s also become a popular fun and learning experience for all ages.
Driven by the passion and commitment of the resort’s engineering and gardening teams, it adds deep value to guests’ experiences.
Guests can even reserve Farm on the Hill for dinner, and take in a private sunset tour of the grounds before enjoying a rurally-wholesome Thai barbecue.
