The annual Bor Sang Umbrella Festival celebrates a village of artisans on the outskirts of Chiang Mai held from 19-21 January. The craftspeople of Bor Sang have long been known for their artfully decorated paper umbrellas and this festival sees visitors flocking to the streets of Bor Sang to visit countless workshops and special exhibitions. Like any good Thai festival, bountiful street food, beauty pageants, carnival games and traditional performances add up to a colourful and lively atmosphere. A parade of parasols featuring pageant contestants dressed in their finest traditional garb and riding bicycles down the main street while twirling their paper umbrellas is a highlight of this unique cultural celebration.
